Key Features of DCS
The IEC 61499 international standard, first published in 2005, marked a significant milestone in the development of Distributed Control Systems (DCS). This open standard is designed to create modular, scalable, and event-driven automation systems. The core of IEC 61499 is its functional blocks, which provide flexibility, reusability, and integration of applications within distributed systems.

With the advent of Ethernet APL (Advanced Physical Layer), it has become possible to create DCS systems that fully meet the requirements of IEC 61499. Ethernet APL allows data and power transmission over a single pair of wires up to 1000 meters at a speed of 10 Mbps. This simplifies the connection of field devices and makes the DCS architecture much more flexible and cost-effective compared to centralized control systems.
