SW 4diac from Insol
A ready-to-use solution for building distributed control systems based on the IEC 61499 standard using Insol hardware.

A build of the open-source Eclipse 4diac platform, featuring a function block library extended with modules for Insol-Node and Insol-1000.
4diac IDE is based on the open-source Eclipse platform, which allows easy integration of other plugins into the 4diac IDE, providing new or enhanced functionality. Systems compliant with the IEC 61499 standard use an application-centric design approach, meaning that the application for the entire system is created first. Each application is built by connecting the required function blocks (FBs) to form a function block network (FBN). As soon as the hardware architecture is known, it can be added to the project's system configuration, and the existing application can then be distributed across the available devices.

The 4diac IDE development environment provides the following features:
  • System Explorer: managing IEC 61499 projects, including applications, system configuration, and project-specific type library.
  • Application Editor: modeling IEC 61499 function block networks using type library elements.
  • Hardware Editor: specifying and parameterizing automation hardware by modeling IEC 61499 devices.
  • Type Editors: creating basic function blocks (BFB), composite function blocks (CFB), service interface function blocks (SIFB) and adapters.
  • Distribution Editor: mapping FBNs or individual FBs to the specified resources.
  • Deployment: selective downloading of applications to the corresponding resources.
  • Monitoring and Debugging Features: tracking and forcing interface element values, as well as triggering events.
  • Testing Capabilities: testing and debugging an individual function block by manually setting data values and debugging algorithms using breakpoints, as well as step-by-step code execution.
4diac FORTE — an IEC 61499 runtime environment for embedded controllers. It is a lightweight C++ runtime that executes function block diagrams designed in the 4diac IDE directly on Insol hardware. On the Insol-1000, 4diac FORTE runs on top of FreeRTOS, while on the Insol-Node, it runs on top of Linux. The exact same program is distributed across multiple devices in the network simultaneously: part of the function blocks are executed on the Insol-Node, and another part on the Insol-1000, with data transmitted between them directly via UDP multicast (PUBLISH/SUBSCRIBE) without a central controller.

4diac FORTE supports:
  • All elementary data types, structures, and arrays of IEC 61131-3 rev. 2
  • Basic, composite, and service interface function blocks, adapters, subapplications
  • Automatic and safe type casting between blocks (e.g., INT → REAL)
  • Online application reconfiguration without stopping the runtime
  • Real-time execution of all IEC 61499 standard block types
  • Program downloading into RAM (deploy for debugging) or saving to a boot file (autonomous start upon power-up)

Available communication layers for integration with the upper level (SCADA, MES) and field devices:
  • Ethernet TCP/UDP
  • OPC UA (open62541)
  • Modbus TCP (libmodbus)
  • FBDK ASN.1
  • RS-485
